Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Victor Samuel Leonard Malu (retd), is dead, The Punch is reporting.
The highly authoritative newspaper said Manu’s death was confirmed to it by one of his relatives in Makurdi, Venue State.
He was reported to have died in a Cairo, Egypt hospital, where he went for treatment.
Malu came into prominence as the Commander of the Economic Community of West African States peace-keeping force, popularly called ECOMOG.
He was the Commander from December 1996 to April 1998 during the First Liberian Civil War.
Malu born on January 15, 1947 in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
In 1967, he enrolled into the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna as part of the 3rd regular course and was commissioned second Lieutenant in 1970.
Malu chaired the military tribunal that tried former Chief of General Staff and Vice Chairman of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, General Oladipo Diya (retd) and others in 1998 over alleged coup plot against the then Head of State, late General Sani Abacha.
