A former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Alani Akinrinade, has described the problem of Nigeria as that of leadership.
Akinrinade said that if the leadership of the country had been spot on, by now Nigeria could have been “where the Asian Tigers are”.
He stated this on Monday in an interview in Channels Television, where he mentioned that “especially since 1970” the leadership of the country has been nothing to write home about.
He, therefore, called for change to a system of government that will suit the country.
He said: “If we don’t allow the various federating units to go back and sit down on their own to reorganise their homes and businesses, this country cannot go far
“We need to have a new system of government.
“The people who govern us are too distant.
“They are not part of the system.
“They look like people who come from Mars.”
Akinrinade also remarked that the country is fortunate that despite all the ills that have plagued her, a revolution has not happened yet and also he opined that there is need to look into why the country spend so much of her resources on security.
He added: “We are lucky – maybe unlucky – that we don’t have the setting of a revolution.
“We are not one people.
“Nigeria itself is an aberration.
“We spend too much of our resources on security.
“Somebody has to agree that we need to reorganise the system.”
The Eagle Online reports that General Akinrinade was Chief of Army Staff from October 1979 to April 1980, and then Chief of Defence Staff until 1981 in the Second Republic.
