A team of medical experts from India and Bangladesh under the aegis of Medical Missionary Group on Tuesday arrived Akure, the Ondo State capital, to offer free health services to the people of the state.
Dr. (Mrs.) Haruna Tantia, who led the medical team, said they were in the state to compliment the good work the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has been doing in the state’s health sector.
Tantia, who stated this during a courtesy visit by the team to Mimiko in his office on Tuesday, said that members of the team, which comprises of different medical experts, were drawn from India and Bangladesh and that they have been coming to Nigeria to carry out the mission since 1998.
She lauded the governor for the attention he has been giving to the vital sector, which she said determines the success of other sectors of every economy.
She also disclosed that the team will be in the state for two weeks.
Mimiko reiterated the commitment of his administration to the continuous improvement of human capital development.
He said that is the reason his administration is investing heavily in the health and education sectors.
He said: “I have no doubt that your presence will add value to our state.
“Therefore, we‘ll do everything possible to support you and ensure that the set goals are achieved.”
He told them that his administration is partnering with an Indian Medical Company, ME-CURE, which had put in place a modern diagnostic centre in honour of the deceased frontline human rights activists in the country, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
While appreciating the members of the Rotary Club International in the state for facilitating the visit of the medical team, Mimiko assured them that the target of reducing the high maternal mortality rate in the state will be pursued with the required vigour.
To achieve the Millennium Development Goal Five, the governor said his administration built the Mother and Child Hospital, which the World Bank has recommended for African countries to achieve MDGs5.
