The President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has said that Nigeria needs external assistance to cope with the devastating effect of the flooding ravaging several parts of the country.
Jonathan, who spoke on Friday during his visit to Anambra State to assess the impact of the flooding, also said the Federal Government would build embankments along the River Niger and River Benue.
The President, accompanied by the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, spoke when he visited Saint Joseph’s Memorial Secondary School camp for flood victims in Aguleri, Anambra East local Government Area of Anambra State.
He described the magnitude of the flooding as being beyond the capacity of all levels of governments in Nigeria, saying this accounted for the opening of discussion with the international community on how to tackle the disaster.
Jonathan said: “We know we need external assistance.
“We encourage you to bear the pains.
“The Federal Government will work with the state to make sure that all of you will get something.
“The ancestral homes and shrines are all washed away, including farm produce, while buildings are submerged.
“I will work with the government in making sure that things are normal again.”
Jonathan said he believes that by the middle of November the flood would have subsided.
He commended Obi and the people of the state for the ability to bear the pains of the flooding.
