The Bayelsa Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Monday pledged its commitment to disaster management to mitigate the he current floods in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the National Emergency Management Agency on September 30 said that some 150,000 people were displaced by flood in Bayelsa, following the rise in the water level.
Yakubu Suleiman, Cordinator at NEMA’s Rivers/Bayelsa Territory, told NAN in Yenagoa that the agency arrived at the figure after evaluation of the flood situation in the eight council areas.
Christiana Abiakam-Omanu, State Commandant, NSCDC, Bayelsa, pledged that the command would collaborate with NEMA to compliment the agency’s disaster response functions.
Abiakam-Omanu said this when she visited the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Igbogene-Epie community in Yenagoa.
She told the displaced persons that the corps had deployed officers to the IDP camps as part of the agency’s role in disaster management.
According to her, the deployment of personnel is to ensure the security of lives and property of those affected by the flood in Bayelsa.
She said: “The role of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps does not stop or start at the safety of the flood victims at the IDP camp.
“Before the flood started, the NSCDC has been sending out warning signals to the people.
“The organisation mapped out areas that could be worse hit, and carried out sensitisation programme as part of measures to take proactive steps to get ready for the worst, which is the peak at the moment.
“NSCDC played significant role in the evacuation of those affected by the flood into the camp, and also ensured the security of lives and properties of the flood victims.
“It has equally deployed its officers and men to assist and provide adequate security.
“I will also urge you to be vigilant and keep watch over your belongings in-as-much as there are security personnel on ground; you should also help in securing your properties and loved ones by being alert.”
Responding on behalf of the victims, Josephine Sokeimi, thanked the commandant for the visit and called on other critical stakeholders to emulate the NSCDC gesture.
