The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has urged women in Abia State to vote for all Peoples Democratic Party’s candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
Jonathan, who made the call during the National PDP Women Rally in Umuahia on Thursday, said such vote would ensure a progressive government for Nigeria.
She said the policies and programmes of the current administration indicated that it had the desire to satisfy the interests of Nigerians.
She said: “I urge you to support the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan because he kept the promise he made to women in 2011.
“He has promised to increase and further improve his programmes for women if re-elected as President of Nigeria.
“I assure you that this progressive agenda for women will have a positive impact on every Nigerian family and secure the future of our children, especially the girl-child.”
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State said: “It is necessary for the women of Abia to vote for all PDP candidates because it supports ideology that encourages nation building.
“It encourages all its members and flag bearers to do the same.”
Kema Chikwe, the PDP National Woman Leader, urged the women to disregard what the opposition had been saying in the media to tarnish the image of PDP flag bearers.
Chikwe said President Goodluck Jonathan and all PDP candidates were poised to ensure that the needs and interests of Nigerian women were not overlooked.
At the occasion, Prince Fred Eke Idika, the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, defected to the APC.
Idika came with over 20,000 of his supporters to the event.
