The national under-20 women’s team coach, Peter Dedevbo, has picked 25 players for his team’s final camping programme ahead of the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
A statement from the team’s Media Officer, Elizabeth Kah, on Monday in Abuja said it was from this group Dedevbo would choose the 21 to represent Nigeria in Canada.
It said the list of players has three goalkeepers, eight defenders, nine midfielders and four strikers, with one overseas-based player joining the team.
The statement said: “One player will join the team from the US, but the goalkeepers are Sandra Chiichii (Ibom Angels FC), Sangonuga Ibijoke (Delta Queens) and Ehiudo Chiudo (Delta Queens).
“The defenders include Ebere Okoye (Nasarawa Amazons), Aidelomon Victoria (Pelican Stars), Nnodim Sarah (Delta Queens), Ugo Njoku (Rivers Angels) and Jiroro Idike (Delta Queens).
“The other defenders are Gladys Abasi (Ibom Angels), Ibrahim Mariam (Nasarawa Amazons), and Ugechi Emanayo (Nasarawa Amazons).
“The midfielders include Ogechi Okuoma (Pelican Stars), Osarenoma Ibginovia (Ibom Angels), Asisat Oshoala (Rivers Angels), Ayila Loveth (Rivers Angels), Ayinde Halima (Delta Queens) and Aluko Yetunde (Sunshine Queens).
“The other midfielders are Edeji Chidinma (Bayelsa Queens), Adeboyejo Yetunde (Bayelsa Queens) and Eyebhoria Winifred (Pelican Stars).
“The listed attackers are Ihezou Chinwe (Pelican Stars), Sunday Uchechi (Rivers Angels), Okaeme Patience (Delta Queens) and Kanu Uchenna (Pelican Stars).”
According to the statement, five players were dropped from the 30 in camp.
The dropped players are Grace Henry (Ibom Angels), Lucky Andy (Sunshine Queens), Amarachi Ojinma (Pelican Stars), Effiom Marbel (Ibom Angels) and Abdullahi Hauwa (Nasarawa Amazons).
The statement quoted Coach Dedevbo as saying that the selected players were capable of representing the country at the World Cup.
He was quoted as saying: “Most of them played the qualifiers which gave Nigeria the World Cup ticket.
“I brought in few of them from the under-17 women’s team and from other female clubs to ensure more competition for shirts and to have a look at other players.
“I must say that the selection was not easy, but I had to pick those who will give the country a better representation.”
The statement added that Dedevbo also thanked the players dropped for their contribution and wished them well ahead.
He said: “Every one of you is capable of representing the country and I will like to appreciate your contribution to the team. You are good, but it is unfortunate that not everyone will go with us.
“I wish you the best and hope that when the country calls you again you will honour future invitations to the team.”
The team, known as the Falconets, has been drawn in Group C with Korea Republic, England and Mexico for the tournament holding from August 5 to 24 in Canada.
