The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State has accused the Federal Government of deliberately setting out to kill a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Afolabi Akanni, in the custody of the Department of State Security by not releasing him despite his frail health.
The party, in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, said with the public knowledge of how the health of the lawmaker had deteriorated in the custody of the DSS and outcry of the state government over the refusal of the Federal Government to obey the court order to release him, it was clear that they wanted the lawmaker dead.
The PDP added that the Federal Government had exposed itself to ridicule by not disclosing the reason for his arrest other than the fact of hinging it on security breach, which was not known to anybody.
Adebayo added that the DSS itself failed to explain what the breach was, whether it was something in the make of the Boko Haram insurgency in some parts of the country or the agitation by Biafran people.
According to the party, the DSS or any other agent of the government owed a lot of explanations on the matter because the arrest of Akanni and his continued detention despite his failing health was wicked.
Adebayo noted that the party and the whole world were waiting for the explanation on when and where Akanni breached the security of the state.
The statement said: “Then we want to ask when and where did he commit the security breach and of what injury does have on the nation that the Federal Government should arrest and detain him without trial for several weeks and many other questions are crying for urgent and accurate answers.”
The PDP spokesman stressed that if the Federal Government would be responsible and responsive, the normal thing to do was to charge the lawmaker to court, grant him bail on condition of poor health so that he could be alive to answer his charges.
