The Federal Government has uncovered about 45,000 ghost workers cutting across 251 Ministries, Department and Agencies.
Yerima Ngama, the Minister of State for Finance, who disclosed this to State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting on wednesday, said the discovery was made possible with the introduction of Integrated Payroll and Personal Information system.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had briefed Council on the activities of her ministry for 2012.
The IPPIS, Ngama noted, was introduced to enhance efficiency in personnel cost planning and budgeting as personnel cost will be based on actual verified number and not estimates.
He added that about N100 billion has been saved.
According to Ngama, about 153,019 staff have been audited as at January 2013, adding that 321 MDAs are yet to be captured on the system.
In addition, the minister said domestic debts, which now stand at N6.34 trillion as against the foreign debts of N900 billion, was giving government serious concern.
In the same vein, he announced that the Excess Crude Account now has $9.2 billion and the Foreign Reserve $45 billion.
The Ministry of Finance has the statutory responsibility of ensuring efficient micro economic management, mobilisation of fund for the real sector development and introduction of structural reforms that will enhance creation of jobs.
It is also saddled with ensuring fiscal consolidation, budget composition, increase revenue generation and the building of buffers to take care financial crises.
