The meeting between the Federal Government and three unions in the education sector held on Wednesday in Abuja over the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement has ended inconclusively.
The unions are National Association of Academic Technologists, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had called for a reconciliatory meeting with the Joint Action Committee of the unions.
The unions had jointly declared their intention to embark on a five-day warning strike from January 16, 2017.
Sani Suleman, the Acting Chairman of the JAC, told journalists that the concluding meeting would hold on Thursday.
Suleman, however, said the unions had reached some decisions decisions with the government.
He said that the decision to suspend the strike would be taken after the unions had held their congresses.
He said: “We did inform this meeting earlier that we have a procedure to call of a strike and that is the procedure we want our branches to go through.
“Because it is also constitutional in our various unions, so we shall, hopefully by tomorrow, when they hold their congresses, the strike will be suspended and work would resume by Friday hopefully.”
Suleman said the reconciliation meeting discussed various issues.
He added: “Those we have talked on, we have taken positions and those are the conclusion that we are going to have tomorrow.”
Ngige had earlier assured the unions of the full of implementation of the 2009 agreement, among other issues raised by the unions.
