The Federal Government on Sunday expressed disappointment over the decision by President Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of Paris climate agreement.
In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr. Clement Aduku, restated Nigeria’s commitment to the accord.
The statement said: “The Paris Climate deal was intended for the common good of humanity and benefit of our planet.
“Therefore, Nigeria, alongside other countries which are signatories to the Paris Climate Accord, shall continue to implement her commitment under the Paris Climate Agreement.
“This is reasonable and in line with our President’s Commitment to the Accord.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Paris Climate Change Agreement is an agreement within the UN Framework Convention on climate change dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance.
The Paris Climate Change Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, with 197 parties.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed the agreement in 2016 in New York, thus making Nigeria becoming 146thcountry to endorse it.
Nigeria, in March 2017, ratified it and became the latest country to ratify the agreement that aimed to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change by cutting carbon emissions.
U.S. President Donald Trump had on Thursday confirmed that he would withdraw his country from the Paris climate agreement.
Trump claimed that the U.S. membership of the global treaty ‘will harm’ American jobs.
The U.S., with the withdrawal from the deal, would be joining Syria and Nicaragua as the countries that are not party to the agreement.
NAN reports that world leaders condemned Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.
Although the president said he is willing to work for a better deal, France, Italy and Germany said in a joint statement that the accord cannot be re-negotiated.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni urged allies to “speed up” efforts to fight against climate change and said they would do more to help poorer countries.
Paris City Hall was illuminated in green Thursday night following Trump’s announcement.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to twitter to criticize Trump’s decision, saying his country is “deeply disappointed”.
