The Federal Government on Wednesday donated farming inputs and empowerment tools worth millions of naira to over 6,000 flood victims in Zamfara.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the items were provided through the National Food Council on Security and Agricultural Intervention on Flood victims under the National Emergency Management Agency.
Presenting the items to the beneficiaries in Gusau, the leader of the federal government’s delegation, Flight Lieutenant, Umar Sani said the donation was provided to 6,268 victims of 2017 and 2018 flood disasters across the eight local government areas of the state.
According to him, the affected local government areas are: Anka, Bungudu, Gusau, Gummi, Kaura-Namoda, Maru, Talata-Mafara and Tsafe.
Sani said that the beneficiaries comprised farmers and women who lost their farm produce and other valuables to flood.
He said the gesture was aimed to support the victims cushion the effect of the flood.
Sani said that the items comprised fertiliser, assorted seeds, farming chemicals, spring sprayers, to be donated to farmers while goats and poultry would be given to women.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bala Bello, thanked the Federal government for the gesture.
Bello, represented by the Director, Security Service of his office, Alhaji Musa Liman said the gesture came at the right time “especially now that the raining season has started”.
He said: “I believe this assistance will support our farmers, I am calling on them to utilise the items on the purpose for which it was provided.
“I am giving you assurance of state government’s commitment to partner with all stakeholders for the development of the state.”
The Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, urged people of the state to continue with prayers to end security challenges facing the state.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Malam Sanusi Kwatarkwashi, said the state suffered a lot from the flood in the previous years, resulting in loss of farm produce and property worth millions of naira.
Saratu Abdullahi and Alhaji Ahmad Usman, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the Federal government for the gesture and promised to that the items would be used utilized judiciously.
