Mohammed Adoke, the Attorney General of the Federation, has commended the moves being made towards the amendment of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission Act.
Adoke, who is also the Minister of Justice, said this on Wednesday at a workshop on the reform of the ICPC Act, organised by the Nigerian Law Reform Commission in Abuja.
The minister, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Deji Adekunle, said that some of the clauses were antithesis at genuinely fighting corruption.
He said that the review was imperative in order to reposition the anti-graft body to fight the current dynamics of financial crimes.
Adoke said: “The law reform exercise conforms to the anti-corruption measures of the transformation agenda of the Federal Government.
“It is appropriate that the Nigerian Law Reform Commission has proposed the amendment of some provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
“Such amendments include but not limited to improvement of the provisions on composition, qualification, tenure of members and quorum for meeting as well as fraudulent acquisition of property by its members.
“Participants are therefore urged to make invaluable contributions to evolve an act that could stand the test of time.”
In his remark, Justice Umaru Kalgo, the Chairman of the NLRC, said the workshop was in fulfilment of the mandate to consult with stakeholders before contemplating the amendment of the existing Act.
Kalgo, represented by Prof. Cyprian Okonkwo (SAN), a Commissioner with the Commission, said that the workshop was meant to elicit inputs from experts to enhance the provisions.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the ICPC Act was enacted on June 13, 2000.
The gravamen of the act is to prohibit and prescribe punishment for all corrupt practices and other related offences.
