Former world number one, Roger Federer, has hinted he could skip the French Open this season.
Federer has been in sensational form in 2017 and managed to clinch an 18th Grand Slam title by beating rival, Rafael Nadal, in the final of the Australian Open back in January.
The Swiss legend has since triumphed at Indian Wells – beating compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka – and the Miami Masters after getting the better of the man he defeated Down Under again.
At 35 years of age, many are wondering how long the Basel-born star can carry on for but his recent resurgence in form suggests he could be around for at least another couple of years.
The next slam coming up is the French Open – a tournament Federer has won only once in 2009 – and many believe a second title on the clay surface is possible.
However, the world number four, who will not play in any competition on the red dirt prior to the Roland Garros spectacle, has cast doubts over his participation in the event after refusing to confirm whether he will or will not play.
“I will decide whether to switch to clay or not on May 10,” he told Tages Anzeiger. “We will sit and speak about it: will we skip the clay season? Or it’s better not to do it?
“Until then I will practice on hard. I will compete only when I’m ready and motivated.”
