The Federal University, Gusau is making arrangements to establish a new Faculty of Mining Engineering, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Magaji Garba, has said.
Garba told the News Agency of Nigeria in Gusau on Tuesday that the decision to establish the faculty was to provide the required manpower, as the Federal Government diversifies into mining and other non oil sectors.
He said that the state also has abundant mineral resources that needed to be harnessed, and the institution would provide the needed expertise.
Garba said: “Zamfara, as host of the university is blessed with large quantity of mineral deposit especially gold.
“Therefore, there is need for the institution to come out with courses that would provide education on utilization of these resources to ensure future development of the state and the country in general.”
According to him, the faculty will take off in 2017 with all engineering courses such as chemical, mechanical, and civil but with specialisation in mining engineering.
Garba said that the institution, established three years ago, currently has three faculties and 18 departments.
The vice chancellor said the university would welcome support form government, wealthy individuals and organisations to reposition it for sustainable growth.
