The Lagos State Federal Controller of Works, Godwin Eke, on Thursday said faulty design and litigation were responsible for the delay in the construction of two pedestrian bridges on Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway.
Eke told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the bridge at Iyana-Ipaja was halted by litigation as well as services and human activities on its right of way.
He said: “There are some services, which include water pipes, on our right of way and the water pipes are on the Lagos bound carriageway.
“The water pipes are not just the ordinary ones.
“They are those of 600 to 900 diameter and we are working with the Lagos State Water Corporation to relocate them.”
Eke, however, appealed to residents, who are in the habit of using the right of ways for their business activities, to allow the construction of the pedestrian bridge to move on.
“We are still talking to the people to allow us construct the bridge, which would improve their welfare,” Eke said.
He also announced that the foot bridge close to Dopemu fly-over, currently at the completion stage, would be relocated due to faulty design.
Eke said that the foot bridge would be moved some metres backwards towards Cement bus-stop to correct the problem.
“As soon as the engineers finish the design to be accommodated in the new location, in the next couple of weeks, we will be able to move back to site,” he said.
On his part, the Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, told NAN that the pedestrian bridge being constructed by the state at Cement bus-stop was stalled by litigation.
“I am positive that the court will rule in our favour,” he said.
Hamzat said that the one at Ile Epo bus-stop had been completed and opened for use.
