The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), on Thursday handed over the seventh Maternal and Child Healthcare Centre and a School of Nursing Complex at the Alimosho General Hospital in Igando, saying his administration’s commitment to public service and professionalism remains undeterred.
The Maternal and Childcare Centre, the seventh in the series of 10 such centres promised by the governor during his electioneering campaigns in 2007, delivered less than a month after the Amuwo-Odofin MCC was commissioned, while the School of Nursing is the state’s School of Nursing, which was relocated from Awolowo Road to the present site by the government.
Other MCCs already handed over to beneficiary communities included the MCC Ikorodu, Isolo, Ifako-Ijaiye, Igbaja in Surulere, Ajegunle and Amuwo Odofin.
The eighth one in Lekki, according to Fashola, is being equipped, while the ninth and 10th ones will be located in Epe and Badagry respectively.
Addressing a large audience of stakeholders, including traditional rulers, market women and men, medical professionals and staff as well as top government functionaries at the premises of the Alimosho General Hospital, Fashola said beyond providing healthcare for the people, government was also interested in providing professionalism for those who opt to engage in the health sector.
The governor said the building of the centres in the different locations across the state has reduced the distance for pregnant women who need specialist and gynaecological care, pointing out that distance could make a huge difference for a pregnant woman who survives and a baby who arrives safely.
He said: “What this has done is that the pregnant woman in need of specialist and gynecological care does not have to travel about 24 kilometres, which used to be the case, from her place to Ayinke House in Ikeja. It means that those who hitherto had to drive from Ikorodu to Ayinke House now stay in Ikorodu, those who drove from Ajegunle to Island Maternity in Lagos now stay in Ajegunle and so it is for all the beneficiary communities.”
