Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Thursday inaugurated an asphalt plant in Imota, Ikorodu, as part of efforts to improve road maintenance in the state.
Inaugurating the project, Fashola said that the plant demonstrated the commitment of his administration to improve road infrastructure in the state.
The plant, with capacity to produce 180 tons of asphalt, would be managed by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation.
He said that the plant would indirectly ease the movement of residents of Ikorodu, Epe and other neighbouring communities.
Fashola said that it would supply asphalt for road maintenance in the axis.
The governor said the plant would also catalyse socioeconomic activities in the area and would provide employment opportunities for people in the communities.
He said: “A lot of things are happening here already as I am told that about 11 roads have already been impacted on by the plant.
“These roads include the LSDPC Road, Agriculture and Itoikin road and the story is not ending there.
“We have sectioned about 66 roads between Epe and Ikorodu that will be the first recipients of the benefits of this plant.
“The project is about development and I am glad we are already seeing the manifestation of that in employment and increased economic activities here in Imota.”
The governor thanked the people of Imota for providing land for the plant, saying that the project would not have been possible without their cooperation.
In his remark, Gbenga Akintola, the LSPWC Chairman, said that the new plant, being the second in the state, would enhance the capacity of the corporation to maintain roads.
Akintola said the plant would reduce pressure on the plant in Ikeja, adding that it would produce asphalt for the fixing of 402 roads in the Epe-Ikorodu axis.
He added: “Work on another asphalt plant is at an advanced stage of completion in Badagry.
“By the time it is completed by the third quarter, it will greatly help us to improve roads in that axis.”
