The O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) on Friday told the Yoruba nation to prepare to see many more betrayers in the coming days, saying people like former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode abound within the South West region.
In a statement by its publicity secretary, Yinka Oguntimehin, OPC said the defection of Fani-Kayode was never a surprise because he had been romancing with the All Progressive Congress (APC) stalwarts all over the country.
Oguntimehin, however, advised those who felt disappointed by the ex-minister’s defection to prepare for more betrayers, saying Nigerian politicians are like chameleons that often change their colours at ease.
“A few months ago, our leader, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, said in one of the group’s events that in the coming days before the 2023 elections, many people would show the stuff they were made of.
“He said many of our politicians are like the chameleon; they change so often, and that many of those that hitherto claimed to be true Yoruba sons and daughters would shift and change their positions because of cheap political crumbs and positions.
“And this prediction is now playing out with the defection of the former minister, many trusted allies of our race would soon join the train as he had rightly said.”
“You can’t trust a politician. Femi Fani-Kayode is just one out of the lot. He has no principle, and he is an agent of the government. So, it is never a new thing to see him defecting from PDP to APC. Fani Kayode has no measure of integrity and he is a political jobber with no ideology.”
The OPC chieftain also expressed worry at the growing debt burden embarked on by the present administration, lamenting that the N$4 billion proposed loan would only add to the economic woes of the country.
“The recent loan request was said to be used for the Kano-Niger Republic rail project and others. Though the federal government had argued that the rail line, when completed, would improve trade among Nigeria, Niger, and North Africa, it must be stated that rather than improving the economic prosperity of the nation, the burden of the growing debt profile and the amount incurred in servicing these loans would only add to the economic woes of the ordinary citizens.
“The Lagos-Ibadan road for instance is a major road in the South West. It has been under construction for the past 12 years; so also Lagos-Badagry road, yet the Federal Government is concerned with Kano-Niger Republic railway.
“This is ridiculous; it amounts to open misplacement of priorities,” Oguntimehin said.
