An expatriate is reported trapped as a building under construction in the Central Hospital, Benin City, Edo State collapsed on Monday.
The building reportedly collapsed when a crane, being used on the site, collided with a freshly constructed beam, a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, said.
Seven persons were said to have been trapped in the rubble but six had been rescued as at press time.
Relief workers were said to be working frantically to rescue the seventh person, an expatriate.
Odion added in the statement: “The ongoing building construction, which is being undertaken by Sincies Chimentin Ltd, an Italian firm, is part of an infrastructural renewal programme initiated by the Adams Oshiomhole administration to upgrade the hospital constructed originally in 1903.”
