The immediate Past Principal of Queen’s College, Dr. Lami Amodu, on Monday exposed how students of the Lagos State-based school were promoted by automatically without writing any examination.
Amodu, who appeared before Joint Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education and Health to explain her side in an unfortunate incident that happened in the school in which three students died, said Queen’s College Old Girls Association ganged up against her with some desperate parent to push her out of the school.
According to her: “Students were sent home abruptly without writing examinations and given automatic promotions because of problem of water in the school.”
She explained that the whole crisis that engulfed the entire nation had to with the role of stakeholders of Queen’s College.
Amodu said: “Because of the indictment of QCOGA in sex scandal White Paper report of 2016, the Federal Ministry of Education issued a circular asking all old students in Federal Unity Colleges to move their secretariat out of our unity colleges in QC.
“They were infiltrating the system, running parallel administration and constituted security challenges.
“For having the courage to implement the circular, they vowed that they would not just get me out of Queen’s College but out of my job and they boasted openly about their influence on the Minister of Education, the Senate President and others.
“It was not surprising therefore when my posting came up suddenly.
“If all alumni were to behave like QCOGA, Nigeria would be in disarray.
“The role of an Alumni everywhere is advisory and giving back to Alma Mater.
“A situation where an alumni arrogates so much power to itself making it exceed its limit by determining which principal remains and which one is removed is unhealthy for any system.”
The immediate past Principal indicted the old girls of the institution in the whole episode of stooling and vomiting that happened in the school.
According to Amodu: “On January 22, 2017, I was alerted by the college security committee members of unusual movements by some QCOGA members around the kitchen borehole area after forcefully gaining access through the hostel gate, which is strictly out of bounds.
“They were sighted with sacked water technician, Alex.
“Before the VP (SA) got there, they disappeared.
“Everyone suspected foul play and I called Dr. Anise who claimed not to know about it and condemned the action.
“I immediately sacked the security man at the gate, Mr. Emma.
“One week later, on 31st January, our girls started drooling and vomiting massively.
“This was prior to the death of the students.”
In his opening address, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic Education, Aliyu Wamakko, said the committee has the mandate of the Senate to ascertain the true position of the matter in order to proffer necessary solutions.
In his opening remarks, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, represented by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Sola Adeyeye, urged stakeholders to make submissions with courage and conviction.
