Akwa United FC of Uyo has secured the signature of former Youth International, Samuel Okon for an undisclosed fee. The defender passed a medical test and signed a two-year deal with the club after agreeing personal terms.
Okon was an integral member of the Golden Eaglets which won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2013. He was also a member of the victory Under-20 team in Senegal.
The defender, who played all of Nigeria’s seven matches at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup two years ago, has been on Akwa Unted’s radar for months and also attracted offers from several top clubs in the league.
The deal is one of many; Akwa United manager, Zachary Baraje believes will add quality to the team.
“He is a versatile player. We have been monitoring his progress for some time now. He has great ability to move forward, and this is one critical area we needed to strengthen in the team. I believe he will settle in quickly and adapt to the philosophy of the club,” Baraje told npfl.ng.
Akwa United open their second round campaign away to Bayelsa United on Sunday. The Uyo-based side is placed 13th on the log with 24 points from 19 games.
