Nestle Nutrition Institute Africa in conjunction with Nutrition Society of Nigeria on Wednesday held a workshop on complimentary feeding in Lagos.
The workshop placed emphasis on behavioural-based nutrition education, which encourages specific healthy eating behaviour such as eating less fat and sodium and feeding more with breast milk.
In her opening speech at the workshop, Dr. Abimbola Ajayi, the Nutrition Director of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, said that Nestle Nutrition Institute Africa in its campaign for healthy living in Africa had made significant progress over the years.
Ajayi said: “As most of you already know, the programme is aim at raising awareness of importance of good nutrition and active lifestyle among our infants in Nigeria and in Africa.
“This is in line with our objective to be trusted leader in nutrition, healthy and wellness and our way to do business by creating shared value.”
Ajayi however concluded that regular breast milk in children will enhance good complimentary feeding in children and reduce the risk of diseases.
Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, while delivering her paper, said in many settings, complimentary foods are nutritionally inadequate and feeding and hygienic practices are sub-optional.
Onimawo however added that it is essential to examine the success of different strategies to improve complimentary feeding.
The workshop had a roll call of eminent health personalities across the continent such as the Coordinator, Nestle Nutrition Institute Affair for Anglophone Countries in West Africa, Chioma Nwachukwu; the past President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Prof Ignatius Onimawo; the Head of Regional Business of Nestle Sub Sahara Africa, Phidelwa Mba, among others.
