The Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Chijioke Agu, has blamed the dwindling sports fortune of the country on the neglect of grassroot sports.
Agu opined that unless the problem is addressed, the nation will not record any meaningful feat.
He hinted that Enugu State is embarking on aggressive infrastructural development, talent hunt and grassroots sports revival.
“Because we have refused to go back to the basis of sports, which is school sports, that is why our sports is facing serious problem today,” he said.
He posited that as a vehicle for social re-engineering and youth empowerment, the sector deserves serious attention, calling on corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to join hands with government in sponsoring various sporting events.
The commissioner, however, hinted that the Enugu State Government has mapped out a comprehensive programme aimed at taking all sports to the next level in the state.
The commissioner said: “By the time the ministry is through with its new sports programme, it would become the nation’s sports haven.”
