An engineer, Uchenna Onwumere, on Wednesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged theft of N19 million from his friend.
Forty-year-old Onwumere resides at 12, Our Saviour Street, Gbara Jakande, Lagos.
The Prosecutor, Inspector George Nwosu, said that Onwumere stole the sum paid to his friend, Kingsley Eze, for a contract he executed.
Nwosu said that the engineer committed the offence on January 15, at Plot 161A, Sinari Daranyo Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Nwosu said that Eze secured and executed the contract with the assistance of the accused, who suggested a registered company with which the contract was executed.
He said that the company, which awarded the contract, later paid N19 million for it, but Onwumere stole the money and did not disclose the payment to Eze.
Nwosu said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes a penalty of three years imprisonment for stealing.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Olatunbosun Abolarinwa, granted him bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case to July 3, for mention.
