Emzor Pharmaceutical industry, a private indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturing group, has urged Nigerians to unite in the fight against abuse emphasizing that the issue of drug abuse is an important one that needs to be looked into from a “wilder perspective”.
The GMD/CEO, Emzor pharmaceutical industries, Dr Stella C. Okoli, stated this in a press briefing with newsmen on Sunday, lamenting that it is regrettable that many a lot of Nigerian youths are having issues with prescription drugs.
Dr Stella called for parents to be more dutiful, government to show willingness and the health practitioners to be more committed as well as the media telling the public on the dangers inherent in drugs with psychoactive effect.
Dr Stella also assured the public that Emzor will always put into consideration the plights of people who buy their products, stressing that it was because of “love for the people” that was why the company was set up in the first place.
She said: “For more than 40 years, we have been providing high quality drugs to all Nigerians and other parts of Africa.
“When we set up this company, we set it up because of love for Nigerians because there was a gap in the healthcare sector and we resolved to make sure that what we will produce will be of the highest quality.”
Dr Stella also emphasized that Emzor has always taken matters that affects the youths with a keen interest and that is the reason the Chike Okoli Foundation was established in 2006 to promote healthy lifestyles and entrepreneurship.
Also speaking, the Executive Director, General Duties, Uzoma Ezeoke, stated that the factory has since been reopened and the company also promised to assist in the rehabilitation of affected people by assisting government or NGOs that are already doing it.
The Eagle Online reports that after the uproar generated from the BBC documentary that exposed the problems of codeine syrups abuse among Nigerians, NAFDAC swung into action and shut down the company’s factory and two other pharmaceutical companies.
