The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday in Lagos organised a retreat for its officers with the aim of reviewing road safety strategies for improved performance.
The commission organised the one-day retreat for its officers in Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the retreat had the theme: “Continuous Assessment – a Panacea for Improved Performance”.
The commission used the opportunity to review the zone’s performance in the third quarter of this year.
The Zonal Commander, Mr Ademola Lawal, charged the officers to be determined to drastically reduce road accidents this end of the year.
“Our task is to reduce road crashes that unnecessarily claim many lives at moments like this; we, therefore, must be strategic in our approach.
“All commanders should initiate new strategies as our zone is strategic, being a window to other parts of the country; we cannot continue to do the same thing the same way and expect a different result.
“Zero crash is our dream for December, it is achievable, only that we need commitment of all our men.
“We need to be very serious in our activities on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; we need improvement on our strategies and introduce new ones in all major corridors to arrest unnecessary loss of life, “ he said.
The commander said that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway would be strategically divided among various units of the command for improved performance.
Lawal warned the officers to steer clear of unethical practice or be punished.
“We want the intelligence unit to strategically monitor the actions of all officers to protect the image of our organisation, “ he said.
The commander said that the zone would intensify its operations on the Lekki-Epe Road to eliminate road accidents.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Chidi Nkwonta, said that road safety culture remained the key to optimal economy.
Nkwonta, who was represented by Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, the sector’s Head of Operations, called on the officers to be dedicated to their duties.
“I wish to remind us that our command is strategic; it remains one of the most accessible windows through which the performance of the corps is assessed.
“Therefore, we must work to cope with emerging challenges.
“We can achieve anything by looking inward and creating something from nothing to prevent untimely deaths on our roads, “ he said.
He urged motorists to maintain the recommended speed limits. (NAN)
