The Ondo State Sports Council has commended the first medal winner for the state at the ongoing National Sports Festival holding in Lagos State.
Olowokande won the first silver medal in the 48kg class of the Judo event, after losing to Yemisi Okelola of Delta State in the final held at the UNILAG Multipurpose Hall B.
Bamido Omogbehin, OSSC chairman, said that the state’s athletes were in Lagos to win medals and do the state proud and not for jamboree, adding that he is confident of the athletes winning more medals.
Omogbehin said: “I have always been saying it, we are here to perform and not to play.
“Last year we came fourth and we are confident that will surpass that record in Lagos now.
“Though every state here is ready for the festival but all eyes are on Team Ondo because they know we are always ready for the challenges.”
In the male boxing event that started on Friday, Omorusi Omoniyi of Team Ondo beat Alujo Usman of Team Kano 8-1 in the 49kg category at the NIS Gymnasium of the National Stadium.
