The Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Folorunsho Olabode Oshayomi, says that the state is looking forward to re-enact its good showing in athletics, boxing and gymnastics at the ongoing National Sports Festival, even as he noted that the discipline of athletes from the state will be the magic that will make them have a medal haul at the Games.
Oshayomi told our correspondent that although Rivers State and Oyo State recorded their names on the medals table but it is still too early to write off a state like Ekiti, which he said will give other states a good run for their money in the above mentioned sports.
He said: “Ekiti State has a strong contingent in Lagos and we will use the festival to showcase the new sports transformation that is going on in the state.
“I am quite aware that some states have won medals but I believe that when athletics, boxing and gymnastics start, we will definitely give other states a good run for their money because that is where our strength lies.”
According to the commissioner, Ekiti State, apart from winning laurels in its traditional sports, will also produce another Soji Fasuba at “Eko 2012”.
He said: “You are quite aware that Ekiti state has produced great athletes in the past who have done the country proud at both the continental and world level and we are ready to produce another Soji Fasuba before the end of the festival.”
