The Oshoko Mass Movement, a pro-Governor Ayo Fayose grassroots’ movement, which was launched barely a month ago, has harvested over 30,000 people.
OMM’s Director of Publicity and serving member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly representing Ijero Local Government Area, Dayo Akinleye, revealed this to newsmen on Monday.
Akinleye, who revealed that OMM projects to get at least 150,000 members ahead of the 2018 gubernatorial election, said registration with the movement embraces political office holders under the Fayose administration, the private sectors associations, trade unions of all formal and informal sectors in the state, artisans, professionals, civil servants and politicians from any political party who love Fayose among others.
According to the state lawmaker, the trade unions of formal and informal sectors, which have now come under a single umbrella with the name: Conference of Organized Private Sectors of Ekiti State, have been joining the OMM as stakeholders.
Akinleye said: “They do not belong to any political party but are following Fayose wherever he goes in 2018.
“They are also contributing their financial, moral and other quota towards building the movement as it would become their legacy after Fayose’s exit as state governor.”
“OMM has today registered over 30,000 members in just about one month of its launching, and this is besides the members of the Peoples Democratic Party, who are fully behind the governor. We also have support of all the members of both the formal and informal sectors in the state. We are actually projecting to register 150,000 members. OMM has already set in motion plans well-cut out plans to register youths in Ekiti from age 17 to 21, those who could not have franchise rights in 2014 for 2015 polls, but are by next year going to be eligible for election. The registration exercise of OMM is targeting at least 1000 from each ward for INEC registration. A total of 20,000 youths is being target ted for registration with INEC as voters.”
Akinleye, who added that the ongoing registration for OMM is preparation towards the forthcoming governorship and general elections in 2018 and 2019 respectively, said: “OMM has at its members all aspirants coming out from the PDP for the 2018 gubernatorial poll and 2019 general elections in the state, but no member of the movement is identifying with any aspirant until a consensus candidate emerges who everyone would then have to endorse. The rally point for OMM is Governor Fayose. Every member is contributing his or her quota to the development of the this grassroots movement financially, morally and otherwise as they are indeed beneficiaries of its legacies, fruits and many other benefits. To tell you how serious we are, the Governor has assured that the campaign office for OMM will be launched on June 21, 2017.”
