The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it would provide free bus ride for residents in its LAGBUS and Bus Rapid Transit buses for this year’s Eid-el-fitri.

Yemi Adesoye, the Public Relations Officer of LAGBUS, said this in a news release made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

“It is a move aimed at promoting the use of public transportation as well as reducing congestion on Lagos roads during festivities,” Adesoye said.

NAN reports that the free ride in the LAGBUS and its franchisees would take place on July 17, 2015 on all LAGBUS routes across the metropolis.

Babatunde Disu, the Managing Director of LAGBUS Asset Management Limited, told NAN on telephone that the buses would run within LAGBUS operational hours of 6am to 10pm.

Similarly, Kolawole Ojelabi, External Relations Specialist, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, said in a statement that the Bus Rapid Transit and Bus Franchise Scheme would offer free service for the Eid-el-Fitri.

Ojelabi said: “Free service will be offered to commuters from BRT corridor in Mile 12 to CMS while Cape Trust Investment Ltd., operators of a BFS will offer services along its corridor – Maryland-Ikeja-Iyana-Ipaja-Ikotun-Igando-axis of Alimosho and Ikeja Local Government.”

Dayo Mobereola, the Managing Director of LAMATA, enjoined residents to have faith in the government in bringing to reality the vision for a world class transport for Lagos.

Mobereola called on the people to reflect on the spiritual significance of the Ramadan fast and to pray for the peace and progress of the state.

He however urged residents to do things in moderation, observe Lagos State traffic laws, avoid speeding beyond limits and respect the rights of other road users.
