Football fans in the smiling city of Akure will troop out to the Ondo State Football Agency office at Football Village, Oda Road on Tuesday to witness the unveiling of two of the sports icons, Augustine Eguaveon and Ike Shorunmu, as coaches of their beloved Sunshine stars.
The mandate to keep Sunshine stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League was only recently handed over to honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, a former Vice Chairman of Sunshine stars Football Club, a former Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports and a former Director General of the National Sports Commission, who alongside his committee members have now settled for Eguaveon as head coach.
Eguaveon, who was caretaker coach of the Super Eagles in 2010 and coach of the Under 23 team in 2011, only recently led the NPFL Under 17 team to a second placed finish at the LA LIGA future champions competition in Soweto, South Africa.
All these experience will be put to test from the second stanza of the league when the former Enyimba and COD coach begins a fresh journey into club management.
Joining him, is a former National teammate and friend, Shorunmu.
Both have accepted to help their friend of many years, Elegbeleye, succeed on his mandate.
“Its a huge responsibility, but we know what is at stake and will approach it with all we have,” Eguaveon said.
The 51-year-old Sapele, Delta State born tactician has also appealed for the support of fans and management of Sunshine Stars, which he says are very key components to success.
Two days before his official unveiling, the management of Sunshine Stars secretly told some players to go, while 15 new legs have been signed on by the club to join a very talented group of players.
They have all vowed to key in to the re-branding process and give their best at re-positioning a sinking ship.
Both coaches will sign a short term contract, with an option of an extension at the end of the 2016/2017 NPFL season based on performance and acceptance by all.
