Nigerian defender, Efe Ambrose, has backed Celtic to improve on last season’s Champions League campaign by making it to the quarter-finals this time around.
Neil Lennon’s recorded a famous victory against Barcelona in the 2012/13 edition of the European competition, with goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt helping them to a 2-1 win at Celtic Park.
The Glasgow outfit followed up on the victory over the Spanish giants with a 2-1 triumph over Spartak Moscow on December 5, 2012, clinching a second-placed finish in Group G.
However, they were eliminated in the first knockout phase after losing 0-5 on aggregate to Juventus over two legs.
And Nigerian international Ambrose feels they can improve on last season’s performance despite the sale of Wanyama to Southampton and the impending departure of striker Gary Hooper.
Ambrose told BBC Sport: “We set the target last year and we want to do better this year.
“We can do even more than what we did last year if we put our mind to it and be determined to work harder.
“We never rely on just two players. We rely on the whole team and the people on the bench.”
Lennon has wasted little time in the current transfer market, bringing in striker Amido Balde along with defenders Virgil van Dijk and Steven Mouyokolo.
Ambrose feels the acquisitions have strengthened the Celtic squad, adding: “I believe in what the manager has seen in them and I believe they are good players.
“That is why they are here. We can see the qualities of the players.”
