The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Frank Okiye, has been removed from office.
The removal of Okiye, who represents Esan North-East Constituency 2, followed a motion by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Henry Okhurobo.
The impeachment letter was signed by nine of the 10 members of the House at the brief sitting on Monday.
A new Speaker was immediately elected.
This followed a motion by the member representing Igueben Constituency, Ephraim Aluebhosele.
The motion was seconded by the member representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, Emmanuel Agbaje.
The Deputy Speaker, Roland Asoro, who presided over the plenary after Okiye’s impeachment, put the motion to a voice vote.
It enjoyed the support of all the members at plenary.
The member representing Esan West Constituency, Marcus Onobun, was thereafter elected Speaker.
