The All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State has said that it will participate in the April local government election, if ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, follows due process.
The state APC Chairman, Eze Nwachukwu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki on Monday.
Nwachukwu, who was given letter of recognition as the substantive state chairman of the APC by the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on March 4 in Abuja, said the party was not in a hurry to comment on the forthcoming Ebonyi State council polls.
According to him, the party has set up a five-man committee to study the state
Electoral law 2017 as amended as well as the guidelines released by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission to enable it take definite position.
Nwachukwu said: “We cannot for now authoritatively say that we will participate in the exercise or that we are going to boycott the polls.
“All I can tell you is that as the biggest opposition party in the state, we are going to study the entire process being put in place by the government and the electoral commission for the conduct of the elections.
“We have assembled a team of legal experts to study the electoral law as passed by the House of Assembly with a view to knowing if the passage was done in strict adherence to the house rules and procedures.
“Again the committee will also study the guidelines released by the EBSIEC to ascertain it’s compliance to extant laws guiding election conduct in the state.
“The committee’s report will equip us with the necessary information needed to take a position in the election.
“But let me assure members of the party and the public that APC as a great party is not afraid to engage in any credible Electoral contest; our position is that due process must be adhered to in every stage of the exercise.”
Nwachukwu said the party under his watch would ensure that internal democracy was given priority in the selection of candidates for any elective positions in line with party’s philosophy.
He commended the National leadership of the party for ensuring that peace returned in the party in Ebonyi State.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ebonyi State has slated April 22 for the election of chairmen and councillors in all 13 local government areas of the state.
