The Ebonyi State political stage is fully set today for a mega rally marking the official kickoff of the governorship campaign of, the Peoples Democratic Party which has the incumbent Governor, David Umahi as the flag bearer.
According to release by Umahi’s Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, the kick off of the mega rally which is expected to hold in all the 13 local government areas of the state would be inaugurated in Ikwo local government area of the state today.
Uzor explained that the choice of Ikwo local government as the place for the kick –off was informed by Governor Umahi’s regards for the people of the area, adding that Ikwo council area was the first local government within the Ebonyi central senatorial zone that showed great support for his campaign in the l 2015 governorship election.
The release further stated that all market women, political heavyweights as well as students are expected to attend the mega rally from all the wards and local government areas of the state as a demonstration of the undying love and belief in the character of Governor Umahi who has positively changed then narrative of Ebonyi state.
Part of the statement reads: “Today being Friday, the 18th day of January, Divine Mandate campaign Organization, the platform by which Governor Umahi was elected will hold the mother of all rallies in Ikwo local government area.
“This is in addition to the demonstration of visible infrastructural and human resources development which the people of the local government enjoy today which had eluded them even in the last administration with their own son on the saddle.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that Umahi has done very well with practical blueprint on how to get Ebonyi state out of her previous sorry state and placing same on the pedestal where Ebonyi has become a model of a developed state.”
Recall that all the clans and communities in the State had earlier adopted the Governor as their sole candidate for the governorship position which election has been scheduled to hold on 2nd March.
Speaking to The Eagle Online correspondent in Abakaliki, some leaders of Umahi’s support group, including Chief Emmanuel Offer Okorie who is the Coordinator of the group known as Grassroots Development Initiative stressed that Umahi does not have any credible rival in the election going by his achievements and structures in place which has endeered him to the people.
Meanwhile, while the majority views Umahi’s choice of Ikwo as a mark of honour to his Predecessor and former Governor, Martin Elechi as well as his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe, who were indigenes of the Council area, few discordant voices allege that the choice was to spite Elechi who since 2015 had been in opposition against the emergence of Umahi.
