The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ebonyi State on Friday returned N57,000 cash and phones recovered from a dead accident victim, Chidi Nwafor, to his relative.
The Sector Commander of the corps in Ebonyi State, Anthony Okore, delivered the items to the family of the deceased.
Okore said that the command received a distress call on the incident on December 15 and its personnel rushed to the scene at Ukwachi junction of the Abakaliki-Enugu federal road.
He said: “We discovered that it was a lone crash as the victim died before we reached the scene.
“We, however, retrieved his valuables and evacuated his corpse to the hospital.”
He said that the FRSC was not revelling in the adulation of such recovery but was more interested in preventing such crashes.
“The victim has unfortunately died and we urge motorists to remember that it is only the living who celebrates festivities,” he said.
Anthony Oroke, a relative to the deceased, thanked the FRSC for the gesture and efforts to assist the victim.
He said: “I drove him to the point he collected the money but he was unfortunately knocked down by a vehicle driving on the wrong lane.
“He has not been buried because the matter is still being handled by the police.”
He said that despite the pains caused by his relative’s death, the recovered items would go to some extent in assuaging the family’s pains.
“I want to urge motorists to see FRSC personnel as their friends and obey traffic regulations to prevent such unfortunate occurrences,” he said.
