Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Saturday in Awka called for more sacrifice towards societal and national growth as Christians mark the Easter.
“As we mark Easter, we must understand that no society can experience real progress without sacrifice, just like Jesus did and died on the cross to give eternal life to all,” the governor said in his Easter message.
Obiano said the celebration of Easter signified the significance of sacrifice to human progress.
He said the period was a crucial reminder to the significance of sacrifice to human progress and advancement.
“Every Easter, the entire Christendom is forced to recall that our salvation is a product of priceless sacrifice,” the governor said.
He said the struggle to rescue Nigerian cities and communities from the vicious grip of criminals demanded a measure of sacrifice from every Anambra State resident.
Obiano urged the people to devote a little time during the period “to reflect on your relationship with your neighbours and the personal sacrifices that we must all make to create a better society for ourselves and our children yet unborn”.
He said efforts had been made since he assumed office to draw people’s attention to “the challenges of building a better society and the sacrifices everyone must make to create a prosperous and happy state.
“While we re-join our loved ones and friends for the joys and happiness of Easter, we must remember not to lose our vigilance.
“Experience has shown that the enemies of our happiness have always seized on the laxity of people during festive periods to wreak havoc on the innocent.
“We cannot afford to concede an inch of ground to these enemies in the on-going fight to reclaim our freedom from our brothers and sisters who have turned against us.”
Obiano advised the people to stay alert and report any suspicious movement around their neighbourhood and communities to security agents.
He said securing lives and properties could only be effective with the active participation of the people.
The governor described Easter as a season for sober reflection and renewal of covenants with God, saying the period should also be used to strengthen ties with families and friends.
