The Sole Administrator of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Dr. Sanda Danjuma, has sought the intervention of the Federal Government in the bureaucratic bottle-neck involved in granting community radio licences.
Danjuma made this appeal while speaking to journalists in Jos during the switch-over from digital to analogue programme for the broadcasting industry and the set up of boxes for the purpose.
The ceremony was performed by the Minister of Information and Communication, Labaran Maku, in Jos.
Plateau State is the pilot state.
Danjuma said that licensing constitutionally still remains the sole responsibility of local governments because of the high number of patronage of larger society at the grass root.
He added that local governments should be mandated to be responsible for providing the licence for digitalization in the country.
Danjuma described the exercise as a great achievement, especially the efforts of the Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang.
According to the council boss: “The state would benefit a lot from this project, which is very, very commendable.
“Plateau State is one of the states in West Africa that had the first colour television, so we appreciate the project.”
Danjuma expressed happiness over it but encouraged the state government to ensure that all the necessary set up boxes are available to people at cheaper price.
He appealed to local governments in the state to key into the programme because Plateau State is a pilot state and receives digital internet facility network of modern television.
He stressed that this will serve as an employment opportunity for the country’s teeming unemployed youths.
