The National Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday battled to rescue pupils at a primary school in Lagos while the children were playing inside flood waters caused by a heavy downpour.
The Information Officer of NEMA for the South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview that the headmaster of Ogba Primary School, Ogba, Lagos, had allowed his pupils to go and play while it was raining.
Farinloye said that while the children were playing in the flooded school premises, some of them almost drowned while some sustained injuries.
The children were only rescued after a call for help got to them.
Farinloye said: “The Lagos State Ambulance Service was on hand with LASEMA and NEMA to rescue the children out from the flooded school premises.”
Farinloye also said that following the heavy rainfall on Tuesday, areas such as Sowonuola, Olanrewaju, Adeyemi and Ijaiye Streets, and Abiola market area of Agege were flooded.
NEMA therefore used the opportunity to appeal to school authorities to take precautionary measures at keeping the school children safe.
Farinloye urged school authorities to ensure that their children remained within the school premises in a safe place and that they should not be allowed to go into flood waters.
He also advised motorists to avoid sitting inside their vehicles during torrential rainfall, because flood waters could carry the vehicles away with the people inside.
NEMA authorities warned that due to frequent cases of building collapse, people should avoid taking refuge under dangerous buildings that might cave in under the force of heavy rainfall.
