There was mild drama in the Senate on Wednesday as the Senate confirmed Barrister Ahmed Mahmud, the nominee from Zamfara State for the Board of the Independent National Electoral Commission against the wish of Governor of the state, Abdul-Azizz Yari.
Apart from the controversial nominee, others confirmed were Festus Okoye (South East) , Attahiru Garba Madani (Niger), Elder Monday Udo Tom ( Akwa Ibom).
However, the confirmation did not happen without a rancour on the floor of the Senate as Senator Kabiru Marafa faulted the report of Senate Committee on INEC, arguing that the report has been compromised and he has evidence against the committee.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Suleiman Nazif, had in his report said a petition was written against the nominee from Zamfara State and therefore recommended that his confirmation should be stood down.
But Marafa, who came under point of order, said the report is not a true testimony of what transpired at the committee meeting.
Speaking in favour of the point of order, Senator James Manager said the report is incomplete because the committee is yet to give the Senate details of the petition.
Coming under point of order, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu cautioned Marafa over using wrong words against his colleague, Suleiman.
However, efforts to pacify Marafa to apologize to his colleague were rebuffed.
