The management of Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has debunked media report that the club has been disbanded.
Media Officer of the Garden City-based side, China Acheru, stated this on Sunday.
According to Acheru, the rumour may have begun with a press release from the acting General Manager of the club saying there will be reforms in the team because ever since then the media has been awash with one story or the other.
Acheru said: “At the end of every football season in any part of the world, clubs take stock of their performance and begin to plan ahead of the next football season and Dolphins is no exception.
“Let us accept one fact that Dolphins is an ambitious club and if you ask any footballer playing in Nigeria, they will tell you that the fastest way to win a trophy is to play for either Dolphins or Enyimba.
“That is the track record we have built over the last 20 years where we have won three league titles and four FA Cups.”
Acheru stated further that Dolphins are also the first Nigerian club to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League and still the only one to get to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.
“So for a club like this, when they get knocked out in the 2nd round of the CAF Champions League, the Round of 64 of the Federation Cup and manage to escape relegation on the last day of the season, questions must be asked,” he added.
He admitted that the management of the club, through the acting General Manager, Dumbor Awanen, last week instructed every coach and back room staff of the club to reapply if they wanted to be part of the team next season.
