Novak Djokovic has opened a handy 4,195 lead over second-place Rafael Nadal at the top of the ATP Rankings following his victory at the Madrid Open.
The world No 1 headed into the ATP Masters 1000 event knowing that a run deep into the tournament would give him a big boost as he only had 45 points to defend from the previous year as he made a R32 exit.
And that’s exactly how it played out at the Spanish clay-court event as Djokovic won the tournament while his closest rival Nadal lost in the semi-final.
It means Djokovic enjoys a 4,195-point lead over Nadal heading into this week’s Italian Open with Roger Federer another 2,175 points adrift in third place.
Dominic Thiem moves up one place in the rankings to fourth at the expense of Alexander Zverev who is down to fifth.
Madrid Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas is up to a career-high seventh with Kevin Anderson, Juan Martin del Potro and Kevin Anderson complete the top 10.
Meanwhile, British No 1 Kyle Edmund dropped five places and now finds himself 27th in the rankings while Cameron Norrie is 45th.
