Hajiya Jummai Abdul, a dietician with the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, has said that eating solid food to break fasting can cause constipation.
Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday that the consumption of fresh fruit juice that had been heated to kill the enzymes could protect the cells of the body from harm.
She said that taking heated fresh fruit juice would prevent the active enzymes in the fresh juice from becoming a shock to the system.
She said: “When we take fruits, it has so much Vitamin C, it has anti-oxidant, it has so many things that will prevent the cells from being damaged.
“But when you take ordinary water, you get nothing.
“By the time you take a bulky meal or solid food, you see end up having constipation.
“You can even take vegetables.
“At least it has something that prevent the cells from being damaged.
“And the fruits, they are just like the body’s soldiers that prevent the body from being affected.
“We should only use fruits, not water, not anything cooked, fresh fruits to break our fasting.
“In one way or the other, it prevents the body from having so many things.
“When the stomach is empty and you are giving the stomach fruit at least it’s trying to prevent the damages in the system.
“So fruit is always the best.”
Abdul also said that acidic fruits such as oranges and grapes as well as plain yoghurt and other dairy products were best for breaking fasting.
The dietician, therefore, urged the public to eat a portion of fruits each day after staying for an extended period without eating before consuming solid food.
She said that food should be consumed in small quantities to avoid constipation.
