BRACED is an acronym for Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross-Rivers, Edo and Delta States.
The BRACED Commission was adopted by the governors of the states to ensure the promotion of sustainable overall development of the South-South geo-political region.
Besides, the commission has ruled out the possibility of crisis among the six governors of the region owing to the festering feud between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Governor of Rivers State, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi.
At its 2nd Economic Summit held between April 26 and 28, 2013 at the Event Centre in Asaba, Delta State, the governors unanimously accepted and adopted in principle the implementation of the Niger Delta Energy Corridor as a regional project.
Since then, the framework for the economic advancement of the region in Agriculture, Education, Environment, Investment, Power and Transportation has been articulated.
Speaking during his Mid-Term report at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, on Tuesday, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s Commissioner for Special Duties (NDDC,BRACED Commission), Chris Onogba, said apart from the appropriate political will to strengthen the educational system for improved access, equity and quality, especially in the areas of early childhood and tenders education, the conflict resolution propaganda of the commission has been strengthened for better performance.
According to Onogba, the commission has successfully resolved several disputes, ranging from the disagreement between Abala-Unor and Abala-Obodo communities in Delta State; and the ensuing row between Agbarho Development Union and Messrs Derena Rocks Limited, the contracting firm handling the construction of a 22 kilometres internal roads, for executing the job shoddily.
The Commissioner said the existing relationship and cooperation among the six governors of the region was intact despite the disputed politics of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.
He recalled that the six governors of the region, though not in the same camp in the factionalised NGF, have kept the faith with the objectives of the Commission by fostering common front for the overall development of the zone.
He said: “On November 3, they met in Benin, Edo State, when Governor Adams Oshiomole played host to the six governors, including Governor Amaechi.
“Yes, politics may divide them but on economic fortune of the region, no way.
“Governor Amaechi was present at the meeting.
“He will be in Delta when the time comes and will be in Abuja anytime the governors of the Commission will brief Mr. President on the master-plan for the overall development of the region.”
Onogba assured the people of the region that as part of the propaganda machine of the Commission, it was poised and determined not to only accomplish its obligation and advance the course of economic cooperation and integration of the member states, but deploy its long term thrust ahead of 2015 to build a closer synergy between the governors of the states and the Presidency, including resolving the raging conflict between Jonathan and Amaechi.
