‘Desert Warrior’ unveils Garden of 95 trees for Mandela in Delta

A garden of 95 trees was on Thursday dedicated to one of the Africa’s greatest heroes, Dr. Nelson Mandela.
Mandela, the former President of South Africa, who waged serious war against apartheid, is currently battling with health challenges.
The garden, planted by a Desert Warrior and an indomitable relentless crusader for a sustainable environment, Dr. Newton Jibunor, was to attract concern against environmental degradation.
The entire world, through the United Nations, has declared the Mandela International Day, in celebrating the legendary’s day.
The garden, according to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, becomes “an irresistible tourist attraction, keeping the memory of that African fresh at all times in the minds of all, even beyond the lifetime of the initiator.”
The governor, who warned that the significance of the 95 trees should not be lost as it drew attention to matters concerning the environment, maintained that Jibunor planted 95 trees so as to be imitated by all to protect the environment by planting trees.
He said: “While the fact of being a coastal state remains constant, we should also acknowledge the man-made factors that contribute to environmental degradation.
“Indiscriminate felling of trees contributes immensely to soil erosion, which ravage and sometimes sack villages.
“We should show enough concern and demonstrate a firm resolve to take concrete action to stem the tide of this furious battering of our environment by climate change.”
While he urged the people of the state to be friendly with their environment, Uduaghan said they should resolve to seek approval before erecting structures and desist from tampering with roads and dumping of refuse anywhere.
He also reminded the people of the 27 minutes recommended to do a selfless job in remembrance of the 27 years Mandela spent behind the bars.
