A Dentist, Dr Simon Audu of Gwagwalada General Hospital, FCT, has advised Nigerians to embrace the use of toothpaste with fluoride content.
Audu gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.
However, the dentist also cautioned against the use of hard brush.
He stated that any toothpaste without fluoride content should be jettisoned, stressing that no dentist would advise or recommend such products for anyone.
According to him, fluoride strengthens the teeth; It helps the teeth to fight all manners of bacteria that are responsible for the formation of dental issues.
He called for caution over the type of toothpaste used, adding that any toothpaste without the endorsement of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control should be discarded.
He said: “We have to take precautions over the toothpaste we use in Nigeria, toothpaste passes through dental association and NAFDAC.
“We in dentistry cannot come out specifically to choose one brand of toothpaste and say you should be using it. It is just like cream and soap, we have different types of soap.”
The dentist also cautioned against the use of hard brush, stating that hard brush caused more harm than good to the oral cavity.
He said: “We don’t advice people to be using hard brush because hard brush cause more harm than good to the mouth.
“If you are using hard brush, there is what we call erosion; it wears away hard surfaces of the teeth.
“In brushing, it is not just the teeth you are brushing; you are also massaging your gums.
“So if at the course of brushing your teeth, it now causes more damages to your gums and to the hard surface of your teeth, you have not done yourself good, instead you have caused more havoc to yourself.”
The dentist said that there were some stains that no matter how hard one tried using the hard brush those stain would not go away.
He stated that two things were usually involved when brushing and bleeding, noting that you either have a gum disease known as Periodontist’s or gingivitis.
According to him, if the person has gum diseases of course there would be bleeding and the poor method of brushing could lead to bleeding.
He added: “Instead of brushing vertically, you are brushing horizontally with force and you are using hard brush, it will cause damage to the mouth.”
