Governors under the aegis of Northern States Governors Forum on Thursday called on the governments and people of Nigeria to use the Democracy Day to reflect soberly on the past and forge a way forward in the area of engendering peace and sustainable development.
The Chairman of the forum and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Israel Ebije, stated that Nigerians must imbibe peace through tenets of citizenship, which he added must be within the confines of good leadership.
He urged Nigerians to imbibe best global practices of ensuring that leadership recruitment system is strategically repositioned to produce leaders with sense of responsibility along achieving collective aspirations of Nigerians.
He observed that the absence of moral chastity among leaders who are often with premordial interests has left gaps between leaders and citizens, which he insisted has caused the present insecurity in parts of the country, with particular reference to Northern Nigeria.
According to Aliyu: “Nigeria is a great country with huge potential in natural and human resources to take the country to its place among well to do nations of the world. We must therefore leverage on this year democracy day celebration to ensure that Nigerians are truly democratized not only by name but by content of character.
“We must eschew action that will plunge us into abysmal fall. We must therefore continue to work against forces of darkness to chat a golden path to our developmental aspiration under a peaceful and united atmosphere based on the tenets of religious chastity.”
The chairman of the forum further called on governments at all levels and the people of Nigeria to continue to believe in one Nigeria, adding that the way and manner insecurity situations are beginning to yield high rate of turnover in the socio-political existence of the country, only strong positive emotional positioning of citizens can withstand the intention of evil persons in the society.
Aliyu added: “Let me therefore intimate that we must democratize our political institutions. We must show hoodlums the door, they are not meant to be in politics.
“Our present security challenge is a resultant consequence of those who have missed out of politics or who cannot achieve any meaningful political pursuit, hence they delve into violence to achieve self seeking interests from the ensuing polarity in the system.”
The Northern governors chairman therefore called on all Nigerians to redirect their attention to resolving the anomalies in the system, adding that until Nigeria is truly democratic and its skewed federalism properly addressed, it would be difficult to salvage it from the precipice.
