Betty Efekodha, the Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, says the ministry has trained 130 physically-challenged persons in the state.
Efekodha told the News Agency of Nigeria in Asaba, the Delta State capital, that they were trained in various skills in the last three years.
“The 100 beneficiaries trained in 2011 and 2012 were presented with starter packs at the end of the training programme to enable them establish their own businesses,” Efekodha added.
She said the 30 who had been trained so far this year would soon get their own starter packs.
The commissioner said the physically-challenged were trained so that they would become self-employed and employers of labour.
Efekodha further said the ministry was collaborating with corporate organisations and non-governmental organisations in training persons with special needs.
“Right now, quite a large number of them are undergoing training in various skills being organised by MTN in our Asaba transit home,” she said.
The commissioner said those newly trained would be presented with starter packs at the end of the eight-week programme.
