The Delta State Government said it spends N23 billion annually for the payment of salaries of secondary school teachers in the state.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Asaba on Monday.
Muoboghare also said that the state government spends about N7 billion annually in assisting the 25 local governments in the payment of salaries of primary school teachers.
He said that apart from the amount spent on teachers’ emolument, the state government invested on the development of infrastructure in primary and secondary schools in the state.
The commissioner said that government invested on school infrastructure in order to ensure that the environment was conducive for teaching and learning.
He said the state government also placed high premium on the welfare of the 13,000 teachers in the 470 secondary schools in the state.
The commissioner said that the state government ensured prompt and regular payment of their salaries and allowances.
Muoboghare, who said “no government can fund education alone”, called for partnership between government and the private sector to ensure qualitative education in the country.
